Just heard over the radio this morning...
An initial 150 buses will be converted to use CNG (compressed natural gas) next month. It is expected that there would be 3000 more that would be using CNG by the end of the year.
Price of CNG will be fixed for 7 years (around P14 / cubic meter).

May 19th, 2005 09:44 AM #2hmmm...sana they can talk to most gas stations to offer refilling services for CNG buses. tingin ko yan ung pinakamalaking challenge
kaparehas na ba ung CNG with LPG? better yet, kung pwede silang gumawa ng "adaptor" na pwedeng isalpak sa ordinary LPG tank, sabay kabit sa bus B)

This is true. The Philippine government has been trying to plan for CNG use for years. Their plans only saw a glimmer of being put into play when the Malampaya plant opened. However, if they are betting their balls on the Malampaya plant, they better think again.
If I'm not mistaken, experts estimate that the gas from the Malampaya plant would not last as long as the government has been advertising. The government projects that the country would save on 47-49% on oil spending due to the output of the Malampaya plant. But since the government is planning for all sorts of things using the Malampaya gas, the demand might outweight the supply/output capabilities of the plan.
Since the Malampaya plant is a B-O-T project of Shell, I'd hold my bets off on that 7-year no-price-increase thing. Why? No matter what has been or would be said, that plant is still "a business", and like all businesses, Shell would want to make money on that one. The quicker, the better.
But hey, don't get me wrong. This is a great project. I just hope that some government screwball don't mess it up.

May 19th, 2005 09:58 AM #4...i think they already did screw it up. di ba ibebenta na raw ung stake ng gov't sa malampayato a korean firm, tapos nagback out ang gov't 'coz the price wasn't right? ok na sana ung move na un , kaso i think they violated some right of first refusal/ek-ek with shell. expect lawsuits and countersuits to ensue.

Yes this project has a huge potential but the problem is will there be enough number of gas stations operators who would be willing to spend an additional cost for the refilling set-up of CNG?
I think this is our opportunity to maximize our use of Malampaya's output dapat tayo ang makinabang dito instead of our CNG's being sold by shell at a bargain price in other countries.

Wednesday, June 09, 2004
Royal Dutch /Shell unit Shell Philippines Explorations BV (SPEX) has pulled out of the Malampaya development project in the Philippines on the grounds of financial impracticality of the scheme.
Naghahanap na nga yata ang PNOC ng bagong investor.
