First franchise for e-jeepney launched in Makati
    Posted on 28 Feb 2012 at 2:05am

The Philippines marked a historic moment in public transportation on Monday, Feb. 27, when the first commercial e-jeepney franchise in the country was formally launched in Makati City.

Sen. Ralph Recto, author of the Alternative Fuel Incentives Act, Secretary Lucille Sering of the Climate Change Commission, Chairman Jaime Jacob of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), commercial franchise holder EJeepney Transport Corporation (EJTC), the Makati City government as represented by the City Consultant Ernie Camarillo, transport groups representatives, and other alternative public transport advocates graced the event organized by NGO group Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (iCSC).

“What we are launching is not the just first e-PUJ commercial franchise, but the rapidly growing community pushing for green solutions,” said Red Constantino, director of iCSC.

“We may be the first to hold the commercial franchise, but what we want is to have more green operators replicating the initiative all over the country,” said Yuri Sarmiento, CEO of EJTC.

On February 8, 2012, the LTFRB issued the country’s first electric public utility jeepney franchise to eJeepney Transport Corporation (EJTC). Come March, the e-jeepney fleet working the Legaspi Village and Salcedo Village loops will be charging a minimum fare for each ride.

“For small operators to shift to eJeepneys, we need to show them that it is commercially feasible for them, for the drivers and the commuters in the long term,” added Sarmiento.

“This launch above all is an invitation to the public, the Makati commuters to continue supporting the eJeepney, to prove that sustainable transport solutions and green enterprises are viable in our country,” Constantino said.

Constantino called for the early passage of Recto’s Alternative Fuels Incentives Bill, which he said will protect the country from the impacts of the turmoil in the Middle East and the wild vagaries of the global oil market.

Also known as Senate Bill 2856, the Alternative Fuels Incentives Bill aims to provide robust policy support and smart incentives to vehicle operators and manufacturer to accelerate the development and deployment low emission vehicles in the country.

the EJeepney Transport Corporation owns the 1st franchise

who owns EJTC? the people who make the ejeepney?

wala naman jeepney operator bumili ng ejeepney so wala jeepney operator mag a-apply ng franchise

the only people who own ejeepneys are city governments (did the city govts really buy the ejeepneys o pinahiram lang ng ejeepney maker?) and the ejeepney makers

Eventually, someone will bite. But only with the support of a city government and/or maybe private contributors.

    -

Hayaan mo. Malapit na ang elections. In the pre-election fever, every incumbent mayor in the area will rush to buy one or two E-Jeeps.

All the E-Jeep project has to do is to ensure their chargers and charge-controllers are good, otherwise, those batteries will expire too quickly, and the bad word-of-mouth will spread and their sales will stall again.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

    A bit of old news...

Electric jeepney fleet proponent pioneers country's first battery swap program
    Wednesday, 19 October 2011 10:08

October 19, Manila - The pioneer of the country's first electric jeepney fleet unveiled this morning an innovative battery swap scheme which its proponents expect "to dramatically improve the efficiency and revenue generation of eJeepney operators." Over thirty guests, including 22 British volunteers headed to Bohol on Friday for climate change solidarity work, graced the occasion.

"With a little practice, we expect the battery change to take the whole of 10 minutes, which is like a common stop in a gasoline station. The previous eight-hour charging process becomes a thing of the past with this program. It means eJeepney drivers can use their vehicles for a longer period and reduce battery depreciation as well," said iCSC executive director Red Constantino.

Constantino said "green aims must be coupled with robust economic benefits. We anticipate double earnings for operators, which is superb since we're already saving a huge amount just because we're using electricity instead of gasoline to power the vehicles."

The Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities, which owns and operates the celebrated eJeepney fleet in Makati City, designed and fabricated the battery program with the support of the British Embassy in Manila. Also known as iCSC, the group is implementing the program in partnership with private sector groups Ejeepney Transport Corp (EJTC) and Motolite.

The scheme is based on a simple roll-off, roll-on logistical set-up, using eJeepneys retrofitted with battery trays and a battery loading bay at the eJeepney depot. A dispatcher rolls out spent battery sets of an eJeepney and replaces it with a fully charged set through a palette lifter manufactured by iCSC.

"Ejeepneys represent huge business potential and improvements in operations such as this scheme can create new revenue streams for groups interested not just in eJeepney operations but in battery leasing as well," said the CEO of EJTC, Yuri Sarmiento.

"We are with you not as passengers but as partners. Together, we can steer our way to a brighter, more sustainable and prosperous future," said Trevor Lewis, the British Embassy's Deputy Head of Mission in remarks made during the event.

"Our company is determined to invest in the future of this country and we are elated to be part of this venture," said Arnold Sarmiento, who represented leading Philippine battery manufacturer Oriental Motolite.

The battery swapping project aims to accelerate the expansion of electric public utility vehicle applications in the Philippines by increasing the operating time of electric jeepney fleets while reducing time used to charge eJeepney batteries. The pilot test period will take place from October 19, 2011 to February 14, 2012. Partners in the initiative hope data from the project can promote a more rapid transition to low carbon transport in the Philippines.

The battery swapping system is located in Makati City's Fire Station, the site of the country's first battery-charging station for electric vehicles. Ejeepney units plying the country's first two routes - the Legazpi Village loop and the Salcedo Village loop -- will utilize the battery swap pilot system, which will be run by iCSC, EJTC, Motolite and Makati City jointly.

"We thank the British Embassy in Manila for their support of the city's endeavors. We are committed to build a low carbon future together with climate change-resilient development," said Makati City transportation consultant Ernie Camarillo.

iCSC works on fair climate policy and innovative energy solutions for localities. It is the pioneer of the Climate-Friendly Cities project, which integrates sustainable waste management and renewable energy generation with electric public transport alternatives. #

So the e-jeeps got a battery-swap system in 2011.... something I already mentioned back in 2007 to offset it's limited range. Something that should have been in the design from the start.

Such a "basic" idea that takes the ejeep group FOUR years to get done? (with accompanying press con of course).

E-jeepneys in Makati to start charging fares
    Tuesday, 21 February 2012 13:52

February 18, 2012 - ELECTRIC-powered jeepneys plying routes in Makati City will start charging fares starting March 1, its proponent announced on Friday.

The Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities said the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board has issued the countrys first franchise for electric public utility jeepneys.

“Finally the project has reached the commercial stage and we’re confident and raring to demonstrate the full viability of the project,” iCSC Director Red Constantino said.

Starting March 1, iCSC said commuters patronizing e-jeepneys in Makati, mostly officer workers, will be charged a minimum P8 fare for the first four kilometers, similar to the fare of conventional PUJs.

In partnership with the city government of Makati and the eJeepney Transport Corp., iCSC, a transport advocate and climate policy think-tank, launched the e-jeepney project on 2007 as an alternative mode of public transport in the citys Central Business District. (Ferdinand Fabella)

sana for every ejeepney na tumatakbo meron diesel jeepney na nababawasan sa kalye

para meron talaga nabawas na carbon-emitter (which is their whole freaking goal diba?)

dapat kung saan meron route ang ejeepney, i-ban nila ang diesel jeepneys plying the same route

kung sabay sila namamasada dagdag traffic lang
