i think the montero was trying to gain momentum, this is needed when you go through mud. that is why we use 4L second gear to have momentum to go through mud.

Momentum? IMHO What you need in mud is Traction. Without it you won't go any further. Plus revving more in the mud will just give you slippage. You have to use the weight proportion of the Montero to get of the mud.

I agree with you that you need traction in mud, but once you loose traction, momentum will get you through. This is based on my experience only, it may differ on your part. but it got me through the worst mud cases ive passed thru, and sometimes it did not also, (na hanger ang vehicle) then its time to call the tractor!
