My Sassy Kidnapper (The Corinthians Caper)[/SIZE]
When Filipino-Chinese are kidnapped, it's tragically normal. When Filipino-Chinese are kidnapped by other Filipino-Chinese, well now, That's Entertainment. William How (a fifty-something businessman) was kidnapped while jogging in Corinthian Gardens, which as most of you know is an exclusive gated subdivision in Quezon City.
Chalk one up for sheer brazenness.
More shocking than the fact that a kidnapping took place in what the upper middle class considers their safe havens in a city full of crime and the desperation that fuels it was the identity of the kidnappers. It turns out that the kidnapper was a 25-year-old friend of the abductee's daugther by the name of Sherwyn Ang and his girlfriend, Michelle Lu. How recognized them because they apparently weren't wearing masks when they pulled him off the street in his sweatshirt and jogging pants.
Wait, maybe not brazenness. Chalk one up for sheer stupidity then.
Or at least, that's what Mr. How alleges. Incidentally, Sherwyn and Michelle supposedly come from two schools near and dear to my heart - Xavier and ICA. How managed to escape, because his kidnappers put on handcuffs but apparently forgot to lock the room...or tie the guy up. He managed to leave the abandoned house in Corinthians where he was being held and called the guards.
Add incompetence to the sheer stupidity, and mix.
And why would someone who comes from a family wealthy enough to send him to Xavier be motivated to kidnap the dad of his friend for a P20 million ransom? No prizes for guessing folks, SPORTS GAMBLING DEBTS. Remember that Probe Team/PCIJ special report about high school kids betting thousands if not tens of thousands of pesos on the outcome of UAAP and NBA games? Xavier was ground zero for that. After all, where else are you going to find kids rich enough to bet thousands of pesos on a basketball game and actually dumb enough to do it?
Pour in the filthy riches, then shake it up a little.
The tragedy of the Filipino-Chinese community is that it's managed to raise a generation of kids who know nothing but money and have neither the conscience nor the wits to make something good out of it. Many of them will end up pissing away the wealth and the good life their parents and grandparents worked so hard to earn. They're wasting it on the most useless, most idiotic things - from drag racing to brawling techniques to hookers. Xavier and the Jesuits, for all their defense of the Men-for-Others ideal, are fighting a desperate rear-guard battle against an ethos of excess, violence and vice.
The Xavier Mafia - it's a recipe for tragedies playing as farce.
After all, money burned is usually sweeter than money earned.
