Thick-skinned and onion-skinned at the same time.

Yep, we're distinctly capable of that.

Someone at the office was relating something like that to me yesterday while we were out on the field. She lives near the racetrack in Cavite and was talking about her neighbor who's a jockey; laki daw ng kita since he's fairly successful, wife doesnt work and has 4 kids who get whatever new gadgets they want, while the in-laws and some relatives even live in their house. All i could think of was "paktay sila pag na disgrasya or pag hindi na makasakay si hinete".

But what do i hate most about my country??? Politics and the systems that support it. If you see it, a lot of the ills can be traced to our stupid politicians.

Aviation industry? OK, but mostly small regional aircrafts and military training, and still depend on a lot of imported components. At least when Embraer was founded during the military regime they had some more national content in the planes.

Working ethanol model? Definitely no, it used to work, but due to lack of planning it's turning into fail. Nearly nothing being done to increase the productivity on the sugarcane farms, price regulator stocks for the inter-harvests are not seriously handled, and due to the "flexfuel" cars the engines were worked around to run on both gasoline and ethanol either pure or blended in any proportion, but they ended up less efficient than a dedicated-ethanol engine (or even a compression-ignited diesel engine operating with ethanol as widely done in sugarcane farms and ethanol plants) would be. Also, in Brazil since 1976 automakers are forbidden to sell any vehicle with a payload under 1-ton fitted with diesel engines, excluding only the 4WD ones with either a dual-range transfer case or a crawler gear (biodiesel is better than ethanol).
