Bishop urges postponement of this year's Earth Day
04/14/2011 | 09:30 AM
A Catholic bishop sought the postponement of this year's Earth Day, which he noted coincides with the Catholic commemoration of Good Friday.
As far as the Catholic Church is concerned, Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo said priority will be given to commemorating Christ's passion and death on April 22, Good Friday and also Earth Day.
“The Church is busy during Holy Week and its observance is more important," Pabillo, who chairs the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines social action secretariat, said in an article posted on the Union of Catholic Asian News website.
He said Earth Day cannot be celebrated on April 22, Good Friday, at least by Filipino Catholics.
Pabillo said Good Friday is a “holy day" for Catholics, and suggested that it be moved to another date because most people are reflecting and doing sacrifices on Good Friday.
Meanwhile, an environmentalist group announced the holding of Earth Day activities a week ahead in deference to the observance of Good Friday.
Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment said a series of Earth Day activities such as seminars, parades and contests will be held starting Wednesday.
On April 26, the group proposes to mark a “Global Day of Action" against nuclear reactors and power plants. – VVP, GMA News

What makes Filipino Catholic bishops sooo special? Are Filipino catholics the only ones left that follow the church blindly?

April 14th, 2011 01:33 PM #8hello! r u guys CatholiC? that's Good Friday we're talkin' about here! it's as sacred if not more sacred than commercialized X'mas.
indeed the Christian values are being attacked, i'm beginning to believe than an apocalyptic intervention is imminent for even entertaining such thoughts like these

In this particular case, Christian values are NOT being attacked. Even the Roman Catholic values are NOT being attacked. Seasons and dates do not make anything sacred. Places and relics and any objects don't make anything sacred. For real Christianity, what is sacred is one's personal faith and trust in his Maker and Savior, nothing more.
Didn't Jesus himself castigate the Pharisees and other "holy men" of Israel for their false religiosity and their traditions that do not make people holy but are instead burdensome?
Read your Bible very carefully and you'll understand what I'm saying.

It seems the Roman Catholic Church is flexing its geriatric muscles in an attempt to bully the government into bending to its will. i remember how they tried -- and failed big time -- when they tried to do this during FVR's time. Too bad for them that FVR isn't catholic. Maybe they're worried that PNoy isn't as kowtowing to them as they expected, such as in the RH Bill? Hmmm....
