Coin shortage in Metro; Church blamed

Metro Manila is now suffering from a severe lack of 25 centavo coins, and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas knows where to look for them.

Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales said the central bank has advised the Catholic Church to start releasing 25 centavo coins because there is no more loose change in circulation.

"The Central Bank told us to tell our priests not to keep the coins too long in the rectory or parishes because if we do we are depriving the public of small change," Rosales said.

He said the Catholic Church has already collected P12 million worth of 25 centavo coins since launching the "Pondo ng Pinoy" campaign more than six months ago.

"Nobody believed us before, but we have made P12 million in six months and that’s only in Metro Manila. They are now seeing the effect," Rosales said, referring to the shortage of coins in circulation.

Upon replacing Jaime Cardinal Sin as Manila archbishop last year, Rosales urged Catholic followers to give 25 centavos to the Church in support of its Pondo ng Pinoy campaign.

Rosales said the fund would be used by the Catholic Church in providing food and other assistance to the poor.

According to the Manila archbishop, many people doubted they would be able to raise a significant amount from 25-centavo donations, "but this proves them wrong."

Rosales said the Church can already help a lot of people with the fund, but they are still hoping to assist more with bigger collections this year. – Mayen Jaymalin

Wala na atang precious metal na copper and silver ang 25 centavos natin.

Remember, dapat masmababa ang value ng coin kaysa sa content nito.. Kundi tutunawin un..hehe

Galing ng church sa pagraise ng fund noh..business minded talaga sila.
