Beauty Pageants are always a crapshoot. Part talent. Part good look. Part luck. First runner-up might be seen as "first loser", but consider she beat the crap out of dozens of other contestants to get there.
I think the more shocking thing is that for the first time I can remember, there was no Miss India in the final ten. And Miss Brazil just barely made the cut for Top Five.
Those are two countries with multiple crowns, where Beauty Queens are an industry. Getting ahead of them is a pretty good achievement.
I expected our girl to get into the top five, but I didn't expect first-runner up. Miss USA, hometown advantage aside, seemed very strong... though very short.
