205 = width of the tire
45 = aspect ratio (aka width of the tire sidewall) the lower the number the lower the profile of your tires.
Offset = The offset of a wheel is the distance from its hub mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel.
rXX = obviously the size of your rim.
Since you have +45 offset, having lesser offset like +35 or +30 makes your wheel go inwards and can give you the rubbing issue. Having more than your optimal offset, like +50, +55 will make your wheel stick out your fender's area. It's not a good look either.
For the width of the rims, you have to look into your car manual or go search the web. For example, your rims are 17" in diameter and has a width of 7" or simply 17x7, I think you can buy tires ranging from 205 up to 225 give or take a few. Going with wider tires with 7" rims will make it a "stretched" look on your tires. Take note also that going wider tires route will increase fuel consumption as you're now gripping the roads better and it needs more fuel to move those tires. Increased traction is the benefit of these.
Hope this clear things up.
So stick to your current offset and start from there.
