IMO the least of our concerns is the ECU, considering that it is relatively easy to cover the box (with a plastic material) and thus protect it from ingress of water.
One of the main problems is with the hydraulically actuated electronically controlled unit injectors (HEUI) which are not visible from the outside and therefore could be soaked with water in case of an engine wash. Then there is an EGR valve which is also controlled by the ECU, the electric coil of which could be also soaked with water. There are myriad electrical connectors and wirings which when soaked with water could be potential problem points, which are very difficult to trouble-shoot in case of an electrical problem.
Conclusion: You should clean your engine compartment as a DIY, and avoid water splashes, punas punas lang, amigo.....

Hmmm...basically stock Troopers are surviving hood deep water crossings in Aussie land. In the US, they even ford water using the V6 engine with minor prep. While over here we can't even wash the engine?
I think it's water pressure, not water per se that is causing the problem.
