There are several concerns [about 0W-16 oils] due to their lower viscosity, like increased wear, increased oil consumption and lower oil pressure. But our long history [with 0W-16] has addressed these concerns. The 0W- 16 project is just the beginning of what JXTG Nippon Oil is striving to do to offset carbon footprints. Actually, we are currently working on an 0W-8 oil."

NOLN: What are some of the changes manufacturers will make in engines as we start to move into these lower viscosities?
Miyamoto: It depends on the company, but we need to control some factors like pressure and friction conditions.

Considering Honda was able to reduce the mechanical friction of the 1.6-liter i-DTEC engine to the level equivalent of a petrol engine:
“All the rotating parts have been carefully optimized to reduce their friction,” says Tetsuya Miyake. For example, a shorter and thinner piston skirt has been used. At 1500 rpm, the 1.6-liter i-DTEC has around 40% less mechanical friction than the 2.2-liter i-DTEC. This not only reduces emissions and improves fuel efficiency; it also improves the engine’s response, both on and off the throttle, making the car more fun to drive. We have reduced the mechanical friction of the engine to the level equivalent of an existing petrol engine, which is an outstanding achievement.”

0W-16 does actually make sense. It's all about fuel economy & efficiency, folks. Earth Dreams?

Don't understand. Those xW-x are operating temperatures of the oil right?

0w-16 is perfect for Japan weather.

Its just too hot here in Manila. Will wear oil down faster. Thats just me tho.

Anyways, following car manual should be ok.

    Viscosity * 100c doesn't mean ambient temp
