Is it bad for the AC?
I've been doing this for years, until lately we purchased a split type aircon for our shop and just before setting off, the people that installed it said to strictly not let anyone smoke inside.
I smoke inside the car with AC on almost all the time. I set the fan to normal level (number '2' during Manila mid day heat) and open the driver's window and just close the AC vent on this side as well. All the other windows are closed.
Btw, both of my cars AC system works brilliantly, even my older car. O baka swerte lang ako di pa napupuruhan...
Just wondering...

Smoke from cigarette carries nicotine inside the car. Your AC filter will block this but not 100%. It mean, the air with nicotine will still enter the AC circulation system and may leave a tar inside your AC system that cause some minor problems.
Not only your AC system affected by this cigarette smoke, it will leave a dark marks inside your car interior with unpleasant smells.

A/C engineers have taken that into account (smoking) but it is not a recommended practice. Nicotine can also stain the ceiling and upholstery in the long term.

I see. I have a friend who told me, I'm like a japanese when smoking inside the car. Kasi, I use the ashtray and smoke even with the AC on. Kaya it's a bummer not to have an ashtray in the Vios (hey Toyota some people uses this).
But I'm just more concern kasi if this practice would lead me to bigtime car AC repair bills in the future.

Toyota wants you to buy the ash cup that occupies the cup holder in other Toyota models. hehehe.
Open top cars can also be driven with the a/c on even when the top is down.

its differs on a non-smoker to a smoker's smell. some smokers are immune to its bad smell. i smoke sometimes at my car, atleast whenever im stuck in heavy traffic or at a long drive and dont have a opportunity to stop and light some sticks.
im the only who smoke cigs in the family, and it seems that im the only one who cannot smell marlboro's perfume at times.

Non-smokers can smell it very well. I know because when my cousin borrow's my Lola's car and it's my turn to use it, I'd know when he smoked in the car.
