Pedestrian safety:
"The hood of most vehicles is usually fabricated from sheet metal, which is a compliant energy absorbing structure and thus poses a comparatively small threat. Most serious head injuries occur when there is insufficient clearance between the hood and the stiff underlying engine components. A gap of approximately 10 cm is usually enough to allow the pedestrian’s head to have a controlled deceleration and a significantly reduced risk of death." Better aerodynamics is correct.
And it's also a result of the cabin-forward design that many cars had been using since around the 90's. It makes the passenger compartment larger by stretching the front windshield and front passenger foot wells into the engine compartment. This makes for a more optimal use of space (ie. the engine compartment is made smaller while the cabin area is increased).

Admittedly it's much easier to drive a car na kita yung hood. But once you get used to it, it doesn't really bother you that much, and masasanay ka rin tumutok kasi natatantsa mo na yung dulo ng hood mo.
Cars today have smaller hoods than a few years back - more compact engine bay = more space for passengers given the same length of the car.

May 23rd, 2012 12:08 PM #8Hirap kasi sa masikip na parallel parking pag hindi kita ang hood. Usually bukas bintana pa ako para sigurado walang sayad. Minsan napapababa pa ako ng kotse to be sure.

Trick ko dyan (if parking facing the wall which is something I rarely do unless pinagalitan ako ng anak ko dahil di daw ako nagbabasa ng instructions) is to turn on the headlights para mas ma-estimate mo ang distance from the wall.
