March 8th, 2010 01:42 AM #1contemplating on adding a turbo on an NA car. is it worth it? or will the pains of maintenance be more than the benefits? will the lifespan of the engine be at risk even on low boost?
car is AT (mazda 3 1.6L) btw so not sure if the transmission can handle it. just wanna hear your inputs. thanks

Are you contemplating the speedlab package? If youre gonna add a turbo, it means forcing more air into the engine and proportionately more fuel... if fuel economy is your goal... well????... but if performance is your target, AYOS!!!
But think of how to stop also, so it means brake upgrades. Plus stabilizers... etc. etc..

March 8th, 2010 11:32 AM #4not gonna race, although occasional track days are fun
came from a civic FD manual kaya parang kulang yung hatak ng mazda, having trouble overtaking, kahit ata vios na manual malakas pa hatak. Dont get me wrong, i love my mazda 3
yup, it's speedlab's package
if not turbo, then probably just CAI, headers, and unichip.

Turbo charging the Mazda3 1.6L A/T is fine but it would probably be just as fast as the Mazda3 2.0L at the end of the day.
In that thought, it might be better to do an engine swap with a 2.0L Mazda3 engine.
The turbo kit from Speedlab should be around P120K or more for the whole setup plus dyno tuning.
The 2.0L engine would give you just as much power while it's stock and better reliability in the long run. And might cost less to make the swap...
That should be something to check out.

The biggest limiter will be what the automatic transmission can handle. It may limit the effective output of the 1.6 turbo to around the same as that of a modified 2.0 (but with more torque).
This is the same with the mazda3 2.0R and most automatic-equipped modern cars.
If all you want is a little more poke, just do the exhaust-Unichip package. If you want power, you might be better off getting a bigger engine... or finding out if you can swap a Focus manual tranny into the Mazda3 along with the turbo...
Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
