Where Chinese brands are concerned, 'rebadged' is just too optimistic a word.
Turns out that Hyundai and JAC previously had a joint venture agreement to assemble MPVs for the Chinese market. For some reason, Hyundai supposedly reneged on the deal and forged a partnership with Guangzhou Auto instead.
So JAC then reportedly took the MPV designs and 'created' their own model, the Refine, which just happened to be based on the Hyundai H1 -- better known as the Starex. Tit for tat? You tell me.Last edited by Bogeyman; January 29th, 2009 at 05:15 PM.

January 29th, 2009 05:11 PM #4same way the koreans did before... look at hyundai grace , H100 that just look like a delica / L300 exceed of mitsubishi.. although they look the same on almost all aspect even on the underchassis but the OEM parts are different from origin.. mitsubishi used made in japan parts while hyundai used made in korea..
this looks nice.. if this use same parts with hyundai much better.. if it breaks just replace it with a oem hyundai
no wonder in the near future, these chinese brands will have their own design and not just a copycat..

That's because Hyundai and Mitsubishi had a proper joint venture agreement AFAIK, which is why the Gen. 1 Grace was a rebadged L300. Same reason why the H1/Starex is a rebadged L400/Delica.
It's difficult to give the same benefit of the doubt to Chinese automakers, considering that the Chinese government itself practically couldn't care less about respecting intellectual property.
