    no experience with car navi so no comment on it.

    Re Garmin, what I like about mine, is that I can load maps for other countries for it. Been able to use it in Kuala Lumpur, Seattle, Oregon, Hawaii and Canada so it really paid for itself. I just looked for free maps using google.
