Re: Do we still need GPS when we can use Smartphone?
never been a fan of standalone GPS devices..
imho, sa lahat ng smartphones/navigation apps na nagamit ko e NOKIA lamang ang nakakapagprovide ng excellent navigation guidance (including VOICE guidance).
I've been using Nokia Lumia installed with Nokia Here+ and Nokia Drive complemented with Waze (for traffic updates).. add to that na mabilis din ang GPS lock (less than 10 seconds, offline mode)..
Nokia Symbian based smartphones installed with Nokia MAPS are also very good!
Sa android naman, I find CoPilot Live and Sygic to be excellent offline navigation applications. Google Maps are only good pag may data connection, mas broad ang sakop niya na establishments and places.
Re: Do we still need GPS when we can use Smartphone?
i used google maps for iOS for a raod trip to pagudpud. never encountered a problem. i just downloaded ilocos map for offline use and I was able to use my phone to navigate even without internet signal in some areas.
Re: Do we still need GPS when we can use Smartphone?
Upping this thread.
I've been to places using Nokia Drive on my Nokia E6 running Symbian Belle. (Most recent was in Macampao Resort, Zambales last Holy Week 2014)
Cons is not all the places in the Philippines are on Nokia Maps.
What i do as a workaround is search the place where i'm going through Google Maps first (by exact location on map and coordinates) then manually save the location on Nokia Maps.
The best features are the offline navigation, < 1 minute position lock, automatic re-routing, accurate speed reading with the car speedometer and speed limit notifier.
My next smartphone will definitely still be a Nokia (as long as they keep Nokia Drive free).
Re: Do we still need GPS when we can use Smartphone?
I still use my Garmin GPSs....
Problem now is I cannot update two of them, as both cannot be recognized by the computer (through the USB port)- tried at least 10 USB cables already on various computers and USB ports.
Worse, both do not recognize the supplemental map in the SD card port.... Oh well,- the old maps generally work okay, still....

Re: Do we still need GPS when we can use Smartphone?
I use Osmand in both my android phone and tablet na available offline. was able to use it on my trips and has never let me down.
Re: Do we still need GPS when we can use Smartphone?
I use Waze most of the time, sometimes Google Maps.
I don't see the point of a standalone GPS though admittedly they have faster lock-in times.
But the advantage of using Waze/Gmaps is that it gets updated almost real-time and even uses traffic updates to plan your route (though sometimes it's ineffective).
Even on routes that I'm familiar with, I still use Waze just to verify if it's the best route for that particular instance.
