PASAY CITY, METRO MANILA—On Friday, the Philippines will be among the first in the world to have the new line of premium Shell V-Power Nitro+ fuel, which promises to be almost identical in performance to the race fuel Shell developed for Scuderia Ferrari racing team.
The new fuel line namely Shell V-Power Nitro+ gasoline, diesel and racing will be launched on June 1 and will replace the current Super Premium products available in the country, said Pia Que-Ang, Shell V-Power brand manager.
“The Philippines is the first in Asia to have this product, which says a lot about how important is the country as a steadily growing market for Shell. It also responds to the customer's need for premium fuel to run today's vehicles,” said Ang in a media interview.
At present, Shell commands a 31 percent market share in the Philippine fuel industry, said Anthony Lawrence Yam, vice president for retail, Philippine Shell Petroleum Corp.
Filipina fuel scientist Mae Ascan from Shell Global Solutions said that the new fuel technology is developed by Shell's 120 fuel scientists and with technical partnership with Ferrari.
In 2010, Shell inked an agreement that takes the long-standing fuels and lubricants technical partnership with Ferrari through to at least 2015.
Shell's close-working relationship with Ferrari provides us with an environment to test new fuels in extreme conditions at the track. This gives us a better understanding of what will deliver improved power and performance for road fuels, said Ascan.
For example, in the Nitro+ Gasoline available at the pump, Shell used the same friction modifiers as in the race fuels developed by the company for Ferrari Formula One cars.
“In particular, 99 percent of compounds found in Shell V-Power race fuel are identical to those used in the Shell V-Power Nitro+ Gasoline road fuel that can be bought at Shell forecourts. It is this remaining one per cent that allows enough experimentation to help give Ferrari the edge on the track,” explained Ascan.
Key to delivering increased performance is the increased detergents in the fuel that clean up deposits of dirt in the car's fuel injection systems, which has the same diameter as a hair strand, said the Filipina fuel scientist.
The products also have increased the friction modifier content to instantly reduce friction in critical engine areas as well as anti-corrosion agents to protect the fuel system, thus helping the engine deliver more power, added Ang.
The Nitro+ product line will be sold at the same prices of the standard V-Power products to be phased out by June 1.
