November 20th, 2023 11:08 PM #52Sulfur in fuel turns into sulfuric acid after combustion, which as can be imagined is bad for the engine, not just emissions.
It's the reason BMW's Nikasil cylinder liners were such a huge issue in the US back then, because they had higher sulfur fuel than Germany where the car was developed. But if a Nikasil-lined engine survived intact till today, then it's no longer an issue because modern fuel has much lower sulfur content.
Sulfuric acid formation is one of the main reasons why detergents are necessary in oil and fuels. (citation: How Sulfur Content in Diesel Fuel Impacts Engine Oil Formulation)
Because of this it's advantageous to run Euro 5 fuel for Euro 4 or even Euro 2 rated engines IMO.
