API Service CI-4; For 2004 Severe Duty Diesel Engine Service
API Service Category CI-4 describes oils for use in high-speed, four-stroke cycle diesel engines designed to meet 2004 exhaust emission standards implemented in 2002. These oils are intended for use in all applications with diesel fuels ranging in sulfur content up to 0.5% weight.
These oils are specifically formulated to sustain engine durability where Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is used and the impact of these oils on other supplemental exhaust emission devices has not been determined. Optimum protection is provided against corrosive and soot-related wear tendencies, piston deposits, degradation of low- and high-temperature viscometric properties due to soot accumulation, oxidative thickening, loss of oil consumption control, foaming, degradation of seal materials, and viscosity loss due to shear.
API CI-4 oils are superior in performance to those meeting API CH-4, CG-4 and CF-4 and may be used in engines calling for those API Service Categories.
The first license date for API CI-4 will be September 5, 2002.
So far only 2 oils being sold in the Phils. claim to meet this:
Caltex Delo 400 (sold only in 20 liter pails and 200 liter drums)
Mobil Delvac 1

March 16th, 2003 07:16 AM #2roydok,
Great info.
Makes you wonder if we need the latest oil standard in our engines given the high sulfur content in our diesel fuel. Some say it is safer to use CF4/CF oil which was designed for high sulfur content fuel thus higher TBN ratings. The latest oils don't need high TBN since they were meant for low sulfur diesel in most western countries.

I agree. The current API CI-4, CH-4 and CG-4 are applicable as API said to low sulfur diesel fuel which will only be able here in the Phils starting next year with the implementation of the last part of the Clean Air Act. Currently I still use API CF/CF-4 oils until the lower sulfur fuel comes in but it won't hurt if we use the newer spec diesel engine oils. :D

The Penn being sold in Phils by Petron is still API CG-4 though I read from the net that US Penn Long Life is already CI-4. Sana API CI-4 na din dito.

Bought a 5Ltr jug of Mobil Delvac MX 15w-40 from ace hardware. Planning to use this on my dmax on its 25k PMS. Still not sure if it has EGR.

As long as dmax manual specifies similar specs to delvac mx 15w40, CH4 oil then you should be ok. In the past, Isuzu has specified Jap CD+ oil which means higher TBN ratings or about the level found in CF4 oils.

jackaroo
is TBN "total base number"? if so this delvac-mx has a 10. is it the same rating as CF, pls advise? and mobil describes this oil as having "high TBN reserves" . then i will assume it exceeds isuzu requirements without harming the engine.
my reasons. to qoute the engine-oil bible, the CH-4 type oil (which is the highest grade recommended in dmax manual for a CASTROL RX brand) is for use with diesel fuel with upto 0.5% sulphur level. CI-4 oils is also described as having "backwards compatibility" with CH-4 oils and as mentioned above, can be use for sulphur level upto 0.5%.
i believe Phil diesel has lowerr sulphur levels than 0.5%. since the only factor that may affect the choice between CH-4 and CI-4 is the sulphur level of the diesel, then as long as your using low sulphur diesel (shell diesel?) you can use either type.
i am justifying and rationalizing my choice since i already bought the oil
yun lang. kidding aside. its just that i believe this delvac mx is the highest rated diesel engine oil that i can afford. so it must be the best for me and my isuzu. performance and value wise.
