Peak hp, peak torque... meaningless without a curve. Have a curve? Meaningless without the gearing. The gearing and power curve? Meaningless without considering the weight and aerodynamics of the car.
Actual 0-100 km/h times? They'll tell you all you need to know. :grin:

To get back to the topic, I do wonder. After looking at various Speedlab dyno sheets, I find that the Fortuner/Hilux 3.0 and the Montero/Strada 3.2 give only around 120whp. And then I see that the non VGT 2.5 Strada/Montero's also hit 120whp and a Strada GLS Sport V hit 170whp. I've driven the VGT Strada, and I know for a fact that it has difficulty going past 185km/h. What gives?

OT: I only need 2 things from an SUV:
1. Head snapping torque.
2. Space
Anything else would be a plus in an SUV (comfort, handling, etc). But that's just me. :)

Basahin mo from page 1 para malaman mo bakit napunta sa time from 0-100 kph to peak hp and torque and gearing, etc etc. All those are related to what the ts asked. Hirap kasi bigla na lang magpopost di naman nagbasa.

Pick up kasi. Same as with my bt50, 200 hp and 470N-m torque pero i doubt if it will go past 185kph (speedometer is only up to 200 kph). It is designed to carry loads and pull trailers, not for top speed. Kaya yung upcoming 2014/2015 ford everest if it has the same gear box as the ranger/bt50 e it will not be worth it, especially if it also has the same quirks (wide turning radius, hard steering).

Not really the gearing - whether I use 4th, 5th, or 6th gear, my Ranger has difficulty past 170 kph. 175 kph was my highest on a straight road. 180 with a slight incline. I doubt that after chipping it, I'll exceed 180.
It's more of the aerodynamics - the Ranger has a drag coefficient of 0.40. The BT-50 shouldn't be far off. That's pretty low for a pick-up but still much higher than a car or even a CUV.
More important than top speed though for me is responsiveness and acceleration from 60-120 because that's the average speed on our Nat'l Highways. Sa SLEX/NLEX/SCTEX lang ako nakakabyahe ng lagpas 140 kph effortlessly.

WHP is peak power - still doesn't translate to how well the power is delivered. End result that you're looking for is still acceleration and sometimes, top speed.
From experience though, I had a stoplight duel (that lasted 60 km) with a Strada GLX-V - it should smoke my Ranger 2.2 on the straights but it was dead even, whether it was from 0-160 or upon coming out of a corner or an overtake (approx 60-140).
I used to feel bad about having "only" 148 hp but that 30 hp gap with the VGT Strada wasn't noticeable at all in real-world conditions.
