So the XV's cargo area is more than the Civic (obviously as it is a CUV) but does the Civic have more shoulder room than the XV?

Right. How I wish there was a Civic hatchback here. That would've made this a lot easier.

Truth be told, my dog rides in the rear seats (without a cage) in either the Montero or Fiesta I drive. It's just that there is a tendency wherein his paws/claws scratches the seats and the doors. If I could find some kind of a car seat cover for him then I won't need to bring the cage with me. You know how we are with brand new things, we tend to "overcare" (if there's even a term) when we first get them.
Dog paw socks?

The Civic has a bigger trunk than the XV's cargo area when the rear seats are up. It's just that the trunk can't load tall things like a dog cage, and even if it did, your dog would get suffocated in the trunk. It fits 2 full sized luggage bags just fine though, plus lots of room to spare for backpacks.

Shoulder room is also more generous for the Civic than the XV, since the Civic is a wider car after all.
