October 31st, 2012 08:46 AM #1020Sir,
Always remember that a good paint preparation is better than waxing alone. Even if you have the top of the line waxes if your paint is in bad shape, you will never achieve that look that you are looking for.
First thing that you need to do is assess your paint. 1 year sounds long enough for it not be waxed and I believe you clean it the conventional way which is by water only and a chamois. Feel the paint if it's rough, if there are asphalts, look if there are lots of swirls and scratches. After that is do the detailing part. If you are not sure on what to do, just bring it to a professional detailer and let them handle it. But if you want to DIY, I suggest do the following:
Wash (Use wash mitts, car shampoo, micro fiber cloths, 2 bucket method - these stuff can be found on page 1 of the Detailing Thread)
Dry
Apply kerosene (Do this to soften those asphalts. You can also wipe your whole car if you want (this is what I do and I never had problems)).
Wash again (To remove the kerosene)
Clay
Step 1 (Cleaning)
Step 2 (Polishing)
Step 3 or Wax of your choice
Tire black
Then just maintain it with a quick detailer.
For steps 1 and 2, if you don't have a machine, those are the hardest and longest and most tiresome part of the process. Lots of elbow grease and would really burn you out. Do it by section at a time. Do a spot test first meaning try it in one small area first and make it look good. Once you have made it look good, then on to the next small area and so on. Don't do the whole car right away.
The materials that you will use matter a lot. Refer to the 1st page of the thread for those.
In regard to the products particularly the 3 step process, just go to any Blade or ACE stores and look for Meguiar's or Mothers 3 step process and you are good to go. It's the easiest to understand especially if you are new to detailing. Or if budget is tight, try Microtex's product line. But if you can stretch your budget and would opt for more durable waxes, go with Collinite or Optimum Car wax. For All-In-One's, Klasse twins or Carlack 68 twins are your best bets. But harder find and pricier.
It's best to do it under a roof and don't use the vehicle in between process for it will pick up dirt once you use it. Since your car is a Montero, if you don't have a machine like those polishers, it would probably take you around 8 hrs to finish it. You could do a full detail quarterly.
Good luck!
