Hi.
I got curious... Is the colored base coat in a "base coat-clear coat" paint job the same as that which is applied in a single stage paint job? ...Or are they entirely different types of colored paint?
Thanks.

different. single stage is known as acrylic enamel, while the base in a base/clear application is the first stage of a urethane paint job.
base coats are intended to only add the desired color and provide coverage...the clear seals, protects, and adds the shine. enamels are intended to do all of the above in a single stage.

acrylic enamel is only used nowadays for underchasis painting. gives a nice glossy finish to the underchassis even when brush applied.
