Market proximity, cost of logistics, policy, and the fact that there are no unions in Thailand.
Consolidating production lines in one location allows a firm to gain economies of scale while eliminating redundancies and maximizing a labor pool. Imagine having only 1 quality management team in one location looking over more products in one location?
Business decisions are often rational, we shouldn't take it against ourselves why these things happen. I mean why is Texas Instruments expanding here? Or crane manufacturers setting up joint ventures with "square box" manufacturer Cetro?
Business is business. If makes sense -do it.

^ but what made them come here on the first place if we lack the recipe for good business?
btw, if TI is expanding, why did Intel left?

Well Ford has been in and out of different economies, even in Europe, for different reasons. Intel consolidated its operations in Vietnam, it also left a few sites in China to do this. This was already planned ahead, but the global downturn in 2008 accelerated their plans to save resources.

So what's the downside here? You provide a ridiculous degree of derision against people who seem to have found collaborative gains.
Test the market and see if it makes sense to move more of your manufacturing closer to your market to take advantage of the local resources.
